The Kelly Cup is awarded annually by the ECHL to the playoff champion. The cup was named in honor of Patrick J. Kelly, the first head of the ECHL and former commissioner of the league. The Kelly Cup playoffs usually involve 16 teams, with eight from each conference, competing in a best-of-seven series to determine the champion.
The Kelly Cup has been awarded since the inaugural ECHL season in 1989-1990. The Alaska Aces hold the record for the most Kelly Cup championships, with three wins (2006, 2011, 2014). The league continues to grow in popularity and competitiveness, with teams from across the United States and Canada vying for the prestigious Kelly Cup.
